"BIG 8" CAUSES OF FOOD ALLERGIES

Did you know that the majority of food allergic reactions are caused by eight foods? They include:
  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Wheat
  • Soybean
  • Peanut
  • Tree Nuts
  • Fish
  • Crustacean Shellfish
In 2004 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration enacted the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act, which required that all food labels identify any of “the big 8” common causes of food allergies. These eight foods are known to cause roughly 90% of all food allergic reactions.

Allergic reactions can vary. Someone may break out in hives after eating shrimp; but that reaction can also intensify with each repeat occurrence, and any single ingestion may lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that happens very quickly.

Look for any of the following symptoms within a few minutes to a couple of hours after eating:
  • Hives or rash
  • Tingling, itching mouth
  • Swollen tongue
  • Swollen lips or face
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing or wheezing
If you’ve ever experienced any of the above symptoms after a meal or snack, look for one of the Big 8 as the culprits. Be aware, too, that an ingredient may be a protein or derivative of a food source. For example, lecithin is sourced from soy, whey from milk.

While avoidance is the best way to safeguard yourself against a food allergen, it’s not always practical – or you may not even be certain of what to avoid! That’s where the food allergy experts at The Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center can help. Trust us to help you pinpoint your specific food allergen and equip you with potentially life-saving methods of treatment should you need it.
